Hi, I’m Paul Labrum. If you had said to me ten years ago that by today I would have been a professional dog trainer for over seven years I would have laughed. But life sometimes takes strange and wonderful turns. I was on the corporate treadmill and not realising how little satisfaction it was giving me. Then in the space of an hour it was all gone, retrenched at fifty two and “too old” to find a job. I decided that I needed to buy myself a job and started looking around for an opportunity; and then I found
Bark Busters.

I looked at the company website and liked what I saw, so I phoned one of our founders Danny Wilson. We chatted for a while and Danny said that he thought that we should continue as he thought that I would be a good fit with Bark Busters. When he asked me where I lived I said “on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria”. You don’t often hear Danny stuck for words but he did pause before saying “the girl who owns that franchise called last night and said that she wants to move to Cairns”. So sometimes you just have to believe that things happen for a reason.

I have been a dog person all of my life, ever since pestering my father to get our first puppy when I was twelve. Since then my life has been enriched by the presence of Labradors, a Kelpie, a Miniature Poodle, a Rottweiler cross Mastiff called Simba and our beloved German Shepherd, Anna. All now sadly gone.

Fairly early in my dog training career I was called by a council ranger who effectively said “no pressure but if you don’t take this Rottweiler she’s going to the pound, and she will come out in a body bag”. And that’s how I acquired Sash. I wanted a challenge to boost my training confidence; and boy did I get one. Sash was a chronic barker, pulled like a train, was food aggressive, and jumped on anyone and everyone. In short a maniac. I used the dog training techniques that Bark Busters had taught me with instant results. We now have an affectionate and obedient dog who is our companion and training partner.
